    Parameters for succession [2 of 2]

    The succession scheme is of two types with one common exception:

    i) The upādhyāya appoints his successor from among the disciples.[1]

    ii) If the upādhyāya dies without a successor, the disciples select among themselves the most outstanding of qualities that conform to the requirements of the 25 qualities of the upādhyāya in the āgamas and the parameters listed in this paragraph. If there is no decision, the seniority principle applies.

    iii) All relatives of the upādhyāya are excluded from succession, relationship excludes succession.
